There has been a lot of suspense about this camera and wether it is even possible to live up to the hype that has been spread like wildfire online. Of course on paper it looks amazing. The build, the design, the features, the video capability, the new sensor, the built in OLED EVF (which is super duper uber FANTASTIC), and the tri-navi controls are everything the enthusiast market has ever wanted in a small take anywhere camera. Hell, I suspect the NEX-7 may even create more of us crazy gear heads because even when Uncle Joe sees this camera he is going to want one.

It has a way of making people wonder what the hell you are shooting with, and when they learn about it they seem to want to own one for themselves. This has happened to me three times while out and about shooting with the NEX-7. BUT the real question for me while shooting was to determine if it did indeed live up to the hype and was worth shelling out $1200 for the body alone, which to be fair is $6800 less than a Leica M9-P and you can still mount your favorite Leica, Zeiss ZM and Voigtlander M mount glass on to! Hell, you can mount just about any glass to this NEX-7, which makes it pretty damn special right there.

Shuttle lands at California air base

(CNN) — Space shuttle Endeavour landed safely Sunday afternoon at California’s Edwards Air Force Base after NASA waved off two opportunities for a Florida landing because of poor weather.

NASA opted to land the shuttle in California on Sunday, because of bad weather at Kennedy Space Center.

Endeavour glides in for a landing Sunday at California’s Edwards Air Force Base.

The shuttle, steered by commander Christopher Ferguson, landed at 1:25 p.m., ending a mission that lasted more than two weeks.

Wind, rain and reports of thunderstorms within 30 miles of the shuttle landing facility at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center prompted NASA to cancel the landing attempts there. Those had been scheduled for 1:19 p.m. and 2:54 p.m. ET.

After determining Monday’s weather forecast at Kennedy Space Center was equally unpromising, flight controllers decided they would try to land the shuttle and its seven astronauts at Edwards AFB, about 100 miles from Los Angeles, California, where Sunday’s forecast was sunny.

Flight controllers prefer landings at Kennedy Space Center because of cost and schedule. NASA has estimated it costs about $1.7 million to bring a shuttle home to Kennedy Space Center from California. VideoWatch Endeavour’s Sunday landing in California »

It also takes at least a week to get the shuttle ready for the trip, but schedule is not a major factor for the Endeavour; it is not scheduled to fly again until May.

Endeavour’s 15-day mission to the international space station began on November 14 and included four spacewalks.

During that time, the crew brought key pieces — including exercise equipment, more sleeping berths and a urine recycling system — for a project to double the capacity of the station from three in-house astronauts to six.

The recycling system was installed to turn urine and sweat from the astronauts into drinking water.

Other modules are scheduled to arrive on a February shuttle flight. The goal of expanding the station’s capacity to six astronauts is expected to be reached by the summer.

The crew also worked on a joint that helps generate power for the space station. Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and Steve Bowen spent hours cleaning and lubricating the Solar Alpha Rotary Joint, which is designed to allow the solar panels on the left side of the station to rotate and track the sun.

The astronauts also removed and replaced several trundle bearing assemblies.

The mission went according to plan, despite a minor interruption on the first spacewalk when a grease gun in Stefanyshyn-Piper tool’s bag leaked, coating everything inside with a film of lubricant. While she was trying to clean it up, the bag — with $100,000 in tools — floated away.

Inspiration for ‘Contact’ still listening

(CNN) — From a remote valley in Northern California, Jill Tarter is listening to the universe.

Jill Tarter at the Allen Telescope Array in California, which monitors radio signals for signs of alien life.

Her ears are 42 large and sophisticated radio telescopes, spread across several acres, that scan the cosmos for signals of extraterrestrial origin. If intelligent life forms do exist on other planets, and they try to contact us, Tarter will be among the first to know.

Are we citizens of Earth alone in the universe? It’s a question that has long fascinated astronomers, sci-fi authors, kids with backyard telescopes and Hollywood executives who churn out spectacles about alien encounters. Polls have found that most Americans believe that some form of life exists beyond our planet.

“It’s a fundamental question,” said Tarter, the real-life inspiration for Jodie Foster’s character in the 1997 movie “Contact.” “And it’s a question that the person on the street can understand. It’s not like a … super-collider or some search for neutrinos buried in the ice. It’s, ‘Are we alone? How might we find out? What does that tell us about ourselves and our place in the universe?’

“We’re trying to figure out how the universe began, how galaxies and large-scale structures formed, and where did the origins of life as we know it take place?” Tarter said.

“These are all valid questions to ask of the universe. And an equally valid question is whether the same thing that happened here [on Earth] has happened elsewhere.” VideoWatch a preview of CNN’s “In Search of Aliens” series »

Thanks to advancements in technology, scientists hope to get an answer sooner rather than later. Rovers have snapped photographs of the surface of Mars that show fossil-like shapes. NASA hopes to launch within a decade a Terrestrial Planet Finder, an orbiting observatory that would detect planets around nearby stars and determine whether they could support life.

“In Search of Aliens”

Such developments are catnip to scientists like Geoffrey Marcy, a professor of astronomy at the University of California-Berkeley who has discovered more extrasolar planets than anyone else.

“It wasn’t more than 13 years ago that we hadn’t found any planets around the stars, and most people thought that we never would. So here we are not only having found planets, we are looking for habitable planets, signs of biology on those planets,” Marcy told CNN. “It’s an extraordinary explosion of a field of science that didn’t even exist just a few years ago.”

Then there’s Tarter, whose quest for signs of extraterrestrial life kept her on the fringes of mainstream science for decades. While pursuing her doctorate at UC-Berkeley, Tarter came across an engineering report that floated the idea of using radio telescopes to listen for broadcasts by alien beings.

It became her life’s work. In 1984 Tarter founded the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) in California. Using telescopes in Australia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico, she conducted a decade-long scouring of about 750 nearby star systems for extraterrestrial radio signals.

None was found, although Tarter had some false alarms. In 1998, she intercepted a mysterious signal that lasted for hours. Tarter got so excited she misread her own computer results: The signal was coming from a NASA observatory spacecraft orbiting the sun.

Today, Tarter listens to the heavens with the Allen Telescope Array, a collection of 20-foot-wide telescopes some 300 miles north of San Francisco. The dish-like scopes are a joint effort of SETI and UC-Berkeley’s Radio Astronomy Lab and have been funded largely by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who donated more than $25 million to the project.

Unlike previously existing radio telescopes, which scan the sky for limited periods of time, the Allen Telescope Array probes the universe round the clock.

Each of the 42 scopes is aimed at a different area of the sky, collecting reams of data that are continually studied by computers for unusual patterns. Then the listeners must filter out noise from airplanes and satellites.

“We’re listening for something that we don’t think can be produced by Mother Nature,” Tarter said. “We’re using the radio frequency, other people are using optical telescopes … and in both cases we’re looking for an artificial nature to a signal.

“In the case of radio, we’re looking for a lot of power being squished into just one channel on the radio dial. In the optical, they’re looking for very bright flashes that last a nanosecond … or less, not slow pulsing kinds of things. To date we’ve never found a natural source that can do that.”

Signals that any extraterrestrials might be transmitting for their own use would be difficult to detect, Tarter said. Astronomers are more likely to discover a radio transmission broadcast intentionally at the Earth, she said.

Astronomers at SETI, however, are not sending a signal into space in an attempt to communicate with aliens.

University of California professor Marcy is skeptical about the existence of intelligent alien life and believes our galaxy’s vast distances would make communication between Earth and beings on other planets almost impossible.

“The nearest neighbor might be halfway across our galaxy, 50,000 light-years away. Communicating with them will take a hundred thousand years for a round-trip signal,” he said.

Still, Tarter remains undaunted. The Allen Telescope Array already does in 10 minutes what once took her scientists 10 days. When the project is completed, it will have 350 telescopes that, combined, can survey tens of thousands of star systems.

“We can look in more places and more frequencies faster than we ever could. And that will just get better with time. We’re doing something now we couldn’t do when we started, we couldn’t do five years ago,” she said.

“Think of it as a cosmic haystack. There’s a needle in there somewhere. If you pull out a few straws, are you going to get disappointed because you haven’t found the needle yet? No. We haven’t really begun to explore.”

CNN correspondent Miles O’Brien contributed to this story.

Mars Science Lab launch delayed two years

WASHINGTON (CNN) — NASA’s launch of the Mars Science Laboratory — hampered by technical difficulties and cost overruns — has been delayed until the fall of 2011, NASA officials said at a news conference Thursday in Washington.

A photo illustration of a laser-equipped vehicle that is set to be part of the Mars Science Laboratory.

A photo illustration of a laser-equipped vehicle that is set to be part of the Mars Science Laboratory.

The mission had been scheduled for launch in the fall of 2009.

The Mars Science Lab is a large, nuclear-powered rover designed to traverse long distances with a suite of onboard scientific instruments aboard.

It is, according to NASA’s Web site, part of a “long-term effort of robotic exploration” established to “study the early environmental history of Mars” and assess whether Mars has ever been — or still is — able to sustain life.

The delay of the launch, according to NASA, is due to a number of “testing and hardware challenges that must (still) be addressed to ensure mission success.”

“The progress in recent weeks has not come fast enough on solving technical challenges and pulling hardware together,” said Charles Elachi, director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Changing to a 2011 launch “will allow for careful resolution of any remaining technical problems, proper and thorough testing, and avoid a mad dash to launch,” argued NASA Associate Administrator Ed Weiler.

The overall cost of the Mars Science Lab is now projected to be roughly $2.1 billion, according to NASA spokesman Dwayne Browne. The project originally carried a price tag of $1.6 billion.

NASA’s entire budget for the current fiscal year, according to Browne, is approximately $15 billion.

According to NASA, the Mars rover will use new technologies and be engineered to explore greater distances over rougher terrain than previous missions to the planet. This will be done in part by employing a new surface propulsion system.

“Failure is not an option on this mission,” Weiler said. “The science is too important and the investment of American taxpayer dollars compels us to be absolutely certain that we have done everything possible to ensure the success of this flagship planetary mission.”

Weiler asserted that, based on the agency’s preliminary evaluations, additional costs tied to the delay of the Science Lab launch would not result in the cancellation of other NASA programs over the next two years. He did, however, concede that it would result in other unspecified program delays.

Critics have charged that the delay and cost overruns associated with the Mars Science Lab are indicative of an agency that is plagued by a lack of accountability and inefficiency in terms of its management of both time and taxpayer dollars.

“The Mars Science Laboratory is only the latest symptom of a NASA culture that has lost control of spending,” wrote Alan Stern, a former NASA associate administrator, in a November 24 op-ed in the New York Times. “A cancer is overtaking our space agency: the routine acquiescence to immense cost increases in projects.”

Stern charged that the agency’s cost overruns are being fueled by “managers who disguise the size of cost increases that missions incur” and “members of Congress who accept steep increases to protect local jobs.”

Browne replied in a written statement saying that NASA administrators are “constantly working to improve (the agency’s) cost-estimating capabilities. … We continually review our projects to understand the true risk in terms of performance, cost and schedule.”

“The fact of life at NASA, where we are charged with creating first-of-a-kind missions of scientific discovery, is that estimating the costs of … science can be almost as difficult as actually doing the science,” Browne said.

NASA’s most recent Mars project — the mission of the Phoenix Mars Lander — came to an end last month after the solar-powered vehicle’s batteries ran down as the result of a dust storm and the onset of Martian winter. It had operated two months beyond its initial three-month mission.

NASA officials had landed the vehicle on an arctic plain after satellite observations indicated there were vast quantities of frozen water in that area, most likely in the form of permafrost. They thought such a location would be a promising place to look for organic chemicals that would signal a habitable environment.

Scientists were able to verify the presence of water-ice in the Martian subsurface, find small concentrations of salts that could be nutrients for life, and observe snow descending from the clouds, NASA said Thursday.

Indian lunar orbiter hit by heat rise

From Harmeet Shah Singh
CNN

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) — Scientists have switched off several on-board instruments to halt rising temperatures inside India’s first unmanned lunar spacecraft.

For India the $80 million mission puts the country on the inside track of a fast-developing Asian space race.

The spacecraft carrying India’s first lunar probe, Chandrayaan-1, lifts off from Sriharikota.

Mylswamy Annadurai, the project director for the lunar mission, told CNN that temperatures onboard Chandrayaan-1 had risen to 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit).

The increase occurred as the craft, the moon — which it is orbiting — and the sun lined up, a phenomenon which Annadurai said was not unexpected and which would likely last until the end of December.

“We have switched off the systems (aboard) that are not needed to be on,” Annadurai said, ruling out the possibility of damage and adding that the temperature was now down to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

Heat on board the Chandrayaan-1 should not exceed 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), Annadurai said — but insisted the orbiter is designed to withstand up to 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Chandrayaan-1 — Chandrayaan means “moon craft” in Sanskrit — was successfully launched from southern India on October 22. VideoWatch the launch of India’s first lunar mission »

Its two-year mission is to take high-resolution, three-dimensional images of the moon’s surface, especially the permanently shadowed polar regions. It also will search for evidence of water or ice and attempt to identify the chemical composition of certain lunar rocks, the group said.

Earlier this month the Moon Impact Probe detached from Chandrayaan-1 and successfully crash-landed on the moon’s surface.

Officials say that the TV-size probe, which is adorned with a painting of the Indian flag, hit the moon’s surface at a speed of 5,760 kilometers per hour (3,579 mph).

It transmitted data to Chandrayaan-1 ahead of impact but was not intended to be retrieved after that.

Chandrayaan-1 is carrying payloads from the United States, the European Union and Bulgaria. India plans to share the data from the mission with other programs, including NASA.

Do black tech entrepreneurs face bias?

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Study: About 1% of tech entrepreneurs who got venture capital in 2010 were black
  • Some people wonder whether “pattern matching” is hindering racial diversity
  • Investors use pattern matching to study the traits that helped past ventures succeed

San Francisco (CNN) — Wayne Sutton has been asking venture-capital investors and Silicon Valley executives a question that’s not often broached here in the epicenter of the technology industry:

“Why aren’t there more black people in tech?”

The vast majority of top executives at the leading Silicon Valley tech firms are white men. Women and Asians have made some inroads, but African-American and Latino tech leaders remain a rarity. About 1% of entrepreneurs who received venture capital in the first half of last year are black, according to a study by research firm CB Insights.

This lack of diversity in Silicon Valley made headlines last month when influential tech blogger Michael Arrington, in an interview for CNN’s upcoming documentary “Black in America: The New Promised Land: Silicon Valley,” said, “I don’t know a single black entrepreneur.” Arrington later recanted the statement, saying he was caught off guard by the question, but the sensitive issue sparked a public dispute between the newly minted venture capitalist and CNN’s Soledad O’Brien.

NewMe co-founder Wayne Sutton, center, works on his laptop at a coffee shop with fellow entrepeneurs.

It’s an issue that Sutton, who co-founded the NewMe Accelerator for under-represented minorities in the tech industry and is also building a software company, has been grappling with for months.

NewMe is an incubator program formed to help minorities launch Internet ventures. For two months last summer, Sutton and seven other black entrepreneurs worked together in a rented house in Mountain View, California, where they got advice from successful executives and pitched their startup ideas to investors.

The venture capitalists, including business-software designer Mitch Kapor, told them the struggles of blacks in the tech industry might be attributed to a concept called “pattern matching,” which is prevalent in venture-capital circles and yet alien to the rest of the business world.

“Silicon Valley really likes to think of itself as a meritocracy,” Kapor said. In fact, “the general state of Silicon Valley is completely backwards,” he said.

A true meritocracy?

Pattern matching comes from a computer-science exercise in which a system looks for common attributes within reams of data. Its companion is pattern recognition, a term that some investors use interchangeably but which describes a less precise method.

In the business of investing, pattern matching defines a technique for figuring out which human traits, corporate makeup and financial projections are the foundations for the next Facebook or other big Internet success. The criteria can include a founder’s track record, personality type and alma mater, which market the company is targeting and how its peers are performing, and how quickly the business is expected to grow and begin collecting revenue.

Commonly, these successful founders are white computer-science graduates of Stanford University or a similar elite school.

Many of the top venture-capital firms use some form of pattern matching, but no two use precisely the same data sets. The firms typically don’t disclose what exactly goes into their formulas because they see their patterns as trade secrets.

But Sutton’s NewMe co-founder, Angela Benton, wonders whether pattern matching, which critics say favors the status quo over change, is a veiled form of racism.

“I was offended by it,” said Benton, who is also starting a company, in an interview with CNN. “I’m black. I’m a woman. I have kids. I might as well go home.”

People familiar with the pattern-matching process say race is not explicitly a factor, nor is gender.

“Most VCs I know pride themselves on the idea that to be a good investor, you have to learn those skills,” said Cindy Padnos, who founded a venture capital firm called Illuminate Ventures. Her company says in its creed, “We don’t rely on ‘pattern recognition.’”

NewMe founders Angela Benton, left, and Wayne Sutton discuss their project.

“I have no doubt that most of what we see happening in the high-tech community is completely unintentional bias, and yet, we all have to recognize (that) unintentional or not, we are all born with it,” Padnos said. “Undoubtedly, the unintentional bias comes into play when they look at the 15 (startups) they did (invest in) and the five that succeeded big-time, when the ones that succeeded were led by white males. That somehow seeps into the equation.”

Race still a factor?

These methods don’t necessarily explain why so few blacks, Latinos and women lead tech companies when compared to the number of white-male execs.

Padnos and her venture firm have researched and advocated for hiring and funding more tech companies led by women. She says she has strived to diversify her 40-person advisory committee and her relatively small investment portfolio, but neither has an African-American.

High-placed female execs like Google’s Marissa Mayer and Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg have advocated on their own for women, and women continue to break into the top executive ranks. Their recent successes, and the rise of Chinese and Indian tech leaders, could provide a model for other minorities in the United States who are hitting roadblocks in their quests to start Internet companies, industry experts say.

But their hard-earned victories have not come easily.

“We live in a society where race is still a factor,” said Rey Ramsey, an African-American man who runs a political lobbying firm for the tech industry called TechNet. Referencing Facebook’s famous young founder, he added, “We’re waiting for the black Zuckerberg.”

A few standout black leaders have emerged in tech over the years, said Charles Moore, an African-American who founded Rocket Lawyer, a startup that offers online legal documents and advice. He cited Frank Greene, a pioneering semiconductor engineer turned venture capitalist who died in 2009, and Charles Phillips Jr., the former Oracle co-president, as inspirations.

“Race has not really been a factor in a material way in my career,” said Moore, whose company is backed by Google Ventures, the search giant’s venture capital arm. “I think that Silicon Valley is a place where you can work hard and be smart and have some luck, which everybody needs. And if you have those things, you can succeed, regardless of your race or gender or other demographic profile.”

Data-driven investing

Google Ventures has extolled the virtues of its data-driven approach to investing, in which it draws patterns from past home runs. For example, the firm has learned, as it told the New York Times in July, that successful entrepreneurs are more likely to create the spark again and that startups located far from the offices of their investors are more likely to succeed.

“Traditionally, the venture business is highly driven by qualitative assessments,” said Bill Maris, Google Ventures’ managing partner, recently at a conference. “We’re trying to also look quantitatively, and apply some data tools and metrics around some questions that make natural sense to us to try and look at.”

A longtime venture capitalist, who declined to speak on the record, said pattern matching, when applied correctly, is designed to spot the rare talent that may hit it big, not promote sameness. It has nothing to do with race, he said.

Many of the top venture firms have said publicly that they use pattern matching to identify potentially successful startups. But when contacted by CNN, they were reluctant to talk about it. Spokespeople for several high-profile venture firms, including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, did not return requests for comment on this story.

Ben Horowitz, who founded his venture firm with Marc Andreessen, wrote on his blog last year that he understands the value of pattern matching, which allows investors to “recognize patterns of strategy and behavior that generally work, and patterns that generally fail,” although he thinks it has limits.

Sequoia Capital’s Michael Moritz has said that age is a factor his firm considers when deciding who to invest in.

New Venture Partners, a New Jersey-based firm with an office in Silicon Valley, uses pattern matching, said partner Daniel Deeney in an interview. But race is not a factor, he said, and several companies New Venture has invested in have black leaders. He said New Venture’s investments tend to go into the telecom industry, where AT&T, Lucent and others have fostered corporate diversity programs that have fostered minority-led startups.

A racial divide with no clear explanation

Little research has been done on the topic of race in the tech industry. Some observers, including Ramsey, wonder whether the lack of racial diversity can be blamed on hiring practices at tech juggernauts such as Apple, Facebook and Google, none of which cooperated with a request by CNNMoney for employee diversity statistics.

Seasoned Web entrepreneur Hank Williams, left, talking with NewMe co-founder Angela Benton.

“The tech industry is pretty clubby,” said Hank Williams, an African-American entrepreneur in the NewMe program who had success in the Internet boom of the 1990s. “There are really no people of color in Silicon Valley.”

Others say the issue could be rooted deep within the black community. The NewMe co-founders said African-American families don’t typically encourage business leaders or programmers to pursue interests in tech.

“The African-American community is like, ‘Oh, nobody is going to give you money to make a website,’” Sutton said. “It’s almost like stupid, or not cool.”

Still others, like the founder of Kapor Capital, say risk-aversion within venture capital stifles changes in the demographics of entrepreneurs chosen to be financed.

“African-American candidates are much more likely not to match the pattern,” said Kapor, who hosted NewMe’s demo day at his office. “To recognize the truth is to accept that the winners at the top did so through a rigged game.”

His wife, Freada Kapor Klein, a longtime adviser to tech firms on racial diversity in employment, believes people of different racial or ethnic backgrounds can solve problems with technology that others can’t because of perspectives learned during their upbringings. Firms that recognize this, she said, should have an edge on less open-minded rivals.

SocialShield

SocialShield -  a parent you have a pretty good chance of meeting your children’s friends, perhaps at a school function, or while giving them all a ride to jai alai practice. You don’t get any similar opportunity to check out their social network friends. SocialShield ($10/month or $96/year direct) tracks your child’s social networking activity and warns if it encounters dangerous reputation-damaging activity. Unlike traditional parental control tools, it sticks strictly to social network monitoring.

SocialShield specifically tracks Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, FormSpring, and Google+. Google+ appeared in the lineup just as this review was going to print, and the company plans to keep expanding the service’s range. ZoneAlarm SocialGuard ($19.99 direct for five licenses, 4 stars) performs a very similar function, but it focuses strictly on Facebook.

Full Disclosure versus Privacy
ZoneAlarm SocialGuard warns parents about problems like cyberbullying, dangerous links, account hacking, and problems with friends. However, by design it avoids recording all Facebook activity. Parents can view the child’s list of friends and specific problem posts, but they don’t get full access to the account.

MinorMonitor (Free, 4 stars) also focuses solely on Facebook and also only shows comments that may be a problem. Parents can view comments in context only if the child’s Facebook security settings allow it. MinorMonitor also offers interesting statistics including a graph of Facebook activity for each hour of the day.

In contrast to these two, SocialShield does record all social networking activity. However, it strongly emphasizes alerting parents to actual problems. The company suggests parents respect the child’s privacy by steering clear of the full activities list except when they need to dig up context for a reported problem. On the other hand, they strongly recommend that parents obtain the child’s account password, to be used only if a cyberbullying investigation requires it.

SafetyWeb ($100 direct, 4 stars) swings the other way. Using only information that’s available to the public, it alerts parents to possibly dangerous posts and helps children secure anything that might affect online reputation. SafetyWeb can also track phone usage and alert parents about abuse.

Other products impact the child’s privacy more than any of these. In particular, Bsecure Online v6.16 ($49.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) and AVG Family Safety ($19.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) capture the child’s login credentials, giving parents complete and total access.

Cooperation Required
Before setting up SocialShield you’ll want to sit down with your child and explain what the service is and how it can help them. The next step is to install the SocialShield app on the child’s various accounts. Parents can install the Facebook app directly, if they have the child’s password, or invite the child to log in and accept the app.

There’s also an option to have SocialShield send the child an email invitation with a personal message from the parent. The child can click a link to accept the app without giving away login credentials.

Clearly this product can’t function without the child’s cooperation. It’s easy enough to uninstall an app, or limit its privileges. Don’t know how to do that? Ask your kids!

Online Monitor
SocialShield is a fully Web-based service, like SafetyWeb and MinorMonitor. You can log into its console from any computer. By contrast, ZoneAlarm SocialGuard runs from a local client program, so you can only view its reports from the computer where it was initially installed.

The main SocialShield overview page summarizes all activity that might be problematic, using a green/yellow/red safety dial to represent the child’s overall reputation score. It further breaks out four specific areas of interest: friend-related safety, safety related to words in posts, reputation related to words in posts, and photo-related reputation. For each category it offers a link to the latest alerts.

There are two levels of alerts, critical and warning. Parents get real-time email notification of critical alerts, and these have more of an effect on the overall score. Newer alerts also count more than older ones. A weekly email summarizes all alerts, with links to get more details.

Clearly some alerts will be false positives. That new 60-year-old friend isn’t a problem if it’s the child’s grandma, for example. And despite SocialShield’s efforts to fine-tune detection of problematic language using context, some posts will always be flagged incorrectly. I like the fact that parents can simply dismiss these false positives, removing them from the child’s reputation score.

Alert Types
Like ZoneAlarm SocialGuard, SocialShield analyzes friend activity and warns if its analysis suggests problems. It will warn if it suspects an adult pretending to be a kid, or an adult sending your child a friend request. Someone who has no friends in common with your child may also be flagged as suspicious. SocialShield’s algorithms for analyzing relationships are proprietary. They don’t want pedophiles gaming the system, so they don’t spell out details.

Posts containing profanity or talk of violence, sex, drugs, depression, or suicide will trigger an alert, as will posts that seem to involve arranging a real-world meet-up. Photos are flagged when the service detects comments that suggest a problem.

Avira Free Antivirus 2012

Avira Free Antivirus 2012 -  it comes to antivirus protection you want a company with experience. Avira has been around for 25 years, which is about as long as PC viruses have existed. The company’s principals want everyone to be safe from malware, so they give away Avira Free Antivirus 2012 (free, direct) for non-commercial use.

Avira can’t survive just by giving away free protection, of course. Commercial users must purchase the paid edition, and those using the free product are encouraged to upgrade to Avira’s full security suite. In fact, the free antivirus’s main window includes all the same components as the full suite, with the unavailable ones tantalizingly grayed out.

Good Lab Results
All of the independent labs I follow test Avira’s technology with the exception of West Coast Labs. ICSA Labs certifies Avira for virus detection and removal. In both the on-demand and retrospective tests by AV-Comparatives.org, Avira took the top rating, ADVANCED+. And in all of the last ten tests by Virus Bulletin, Avira received the VB100 award for complete success.

AV-Comparatives also runs a dynamic whole-product test, challenging multiple products to defend against real-world malicious attack over a period of weeks. In this test Avira rated ADVANCED, the second highest rating.

Every two months AV-Test.org releases antivirus certification results based on real world testing under Windows 7, Vista, or XP. Products can earn up to six points for protection, remediation, and usability, with a total of 11 required to pass. Like BullGuard and Trend Micro, Avira averaged 12.5 points in the latest three tests. Bitdefender’s average of 16.33 is currently the best. For more details on what these tests mean, see How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests.

Good Malware Cleanup
Avira installed without incident on my twelve malware-infested test systems. The antivirus runs a quick scan for active malware immediately upon installation. This scan caught quite a few threats and required a reboot on most of the test systems. One even needed a second reboot.

A full scan of my standard clean test system took 20 minutes, a bit below the average. However, a second scan came in only a couple minutes shorter. AVG Anti-Virus Free 2012 (Free, 4 stars), Norton AntiVirus 2012 ($39.99 direct, 4.5 stars), and others cut the time for a repeat scan by 90 percent or more.

Avira’s real-time protection also nabbed a few of the threats. By default it simply blocks access to the threat and asks for permission to fully remove it. When you grant permission it runs a mini-scan to detect related malware traces. A couple of the test systems had three or more of these mini-scans running at once, making for a very busy desktop. I’m not complaining; if the system is badly infested with malware the antivirus should be busy.

After running a complete scan on all of the test systems I tallied up the results. Avira detected 88 percent of the threats, the same as AVG. It scored 6.7 points for malware cleanup overall, a bit better than AVG’s 6.5.

In the breakout test looking specifically at scareware, Avira detected all the threats and scored 9.5 points. That’s exactly the same as AVG, Norman Malware Cleaner 2.1 (Free, 3.5 stars), and Panda Cloud Anti-Virus 1.5 Free Edition (Free, 3.5 stars). Of recent free antivirus products, only Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware Free 1.51 (Free, 4 stars) did better, scoring a perfect 10.

Avira didn’t do as well against threats using rootkit technology. It detected 86 percent of those and scored 5.0 points. AVG and Panda detected 100 percent and scored 6.7 points and 4.1 points respectively. The champion against rootkits is Norton, which detected 100 percent and scored 8.9 points. To fully understand the source of these scores, see see How We Test Malware Removal.
